Moda Fabrics Charm Sunday Quilt Pattern – Downloadable PDF Summary

The Charm Sunday Quilt by Moda Fabrics is a beautifully structured bed or lap quilt measuring 64" x 87½". Designed at an intermediate difficulty level, this pattern is a wonderful project for quilters who are comfortable with basic patchwork and are ready to explore more precise piecing techniques. The pattern is available as a free downloadable PDF, making it an accessible choice for quilters looking to use up charm packs or fat quarters from their stash.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a full-sized quilt top constructed from a combination of half square triangle blocks and traditional patchwork blocks. The finished quilt showcases a dynamic interplay of light and dark fabrics, creating visual contrast and depth across the quilt surface. The design is well-suited to the use of precut 5" charm squares, which streamline the cutting process and allow for a wide variety of prints to appear throughout the quilt.

Quilt Blocks and Construction

Block A

Block A is the primary block in this quilt and is repeated 65 times. Each Block A finishes at 5" x 8½" with seams and is constructed from a combination of smaller pieced units. The block incorporates both rectangular and square subunits cut from light and dark fabrics, requiring careful pressing and precise seam alignment to achieve a clean, flat result.

Half Square Triangle Blocks

The pattern also calls for 30 half square triangle (HST) blocks, each finishing at 4½" x 4½" with seams. Half square triangles are one of the most fundamental and versatile units in quilting. To construct them, a diagonal line is drawn on the wrong side of a 5" x 5" light charm square. The light square is then paired with a dark square, and a ¼" seam is sewn on each side of the drawn diagonal line. The unit is then cut apart on the diagonal line and pressed open, yielding two half square triangles from each pair of squares. This efficient two-at-a-time method is a staple technique in intermediate quilting and helps maximize fabric usage.

Techniques Used

  • Half square triangle construction using the draw-and-sew diagonal method
  • Patchwork block assembly with precise strip and square piecing
  • Pressing seams open to reduce bulk and improve block flatness
  • Accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout all construction steps
  • Straight-grain binding application using 2½" wide strips cut across the width of fabric

Stitches Used

  • Straight stitch – used for all piecing seams, maintaining a consistent ¼" seam allowance
  • Diagonal straight stitch – sewn on each side of the marked diagonal line to create half square triangle units

Materials Required

Fabric

The pattern is designed around precut 5" charm squares, requiring 12 charm packs as the primary option. Alternatively, quilters may substitute 24 light fat quarters and 21 dark fat quarters. The design relies heavily on the contrast between light and dark fabrics, with the light fabrics contributing 197 squares and dark fabrics contributing 249 squares to the overall layout. If fat quarters are used in place of charm packs, the pattern notes that an additional 35 light and 15 dark 5" x 5" squares should be cut to compensate for the difference in precut sizing.

Cutting Requirements

The pattern provides detailed cutting instructions to break down charm squares and fat quarters into the subunits needed for each block:

  • Light fabrics: cut into 4½" x 4½", 4½" x 5", 2½"
