The scarf features a flowing textured pattern created through directional decreases rather than traditional cable stitches. The design incorporates left- and right-leaning decreases that form columns of stitches representing a journey's roads, rivers, and forests. A subtle detail—Gandalf's rune—is incorporated unobtrusively into one corner of the finished scarf, adding a literary touch for fans of the source material.

This laceweight construction ensures the scarf remains light and drapey despite its length and width. The pattern notes that fingering-weight yarn would also work well as a substitute, though this would result in slightly larger finished dimensions.
