Mini Mandala Garland Crochet Pattern by LillaBjörnCrochet

What is Being Made

The Mini Mandala Garland is a decorative crochet project designed to create a strung garland featuring small mandala motifs. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer LillaBjörnCrochet (Tatsiana Kupryianchyk) provides instructions for crafting multiple crocheted mandalas that can be joined together to form a finished garland suitable for home decoration or display.

Craft and Technique Overview

This is a crochet project classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some foundational experience. The pattern uses overlay crochet techniques to create dimensional mandala designs with visual depth and texture. Overlay crochet involves working stitches through specific loops to build layered effects, allowing the crocheter to create intricate patterned surfaces.

Stitches Used

The Mini Mandala Garland pattern employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to construct the mandala motifs:

  • Chain (ch) – Used to create foundation loops and increase stitch counts
  • Single Crochet (sc) – A basic short stitch used for structure and detail work
  • Double Crochet (dc) – A medium-height stitch used to build the body of the mandalas
  • Treble Crochet (tr) – A taller stitch that adds height and variation to the design
  • Treble Crochet 4 Together (tr4tog) – A decrease technique that combines four treble stitches into one, creating shaping and definition
  • Slip Stitch (slst) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between sections
  • Single Crochet Spoke Stitch (SPsc) – A specialized stitch technique that creates radiating spoke-like patterns characteristic of mandala designs
  • Yarn Over (yo) – A foundational technique used in multiple stitches to create loops
  • Increases (inc) – Techniques to expand stitch counts for shaping the mandala rounds
  • Front Loop and Back Loop (FL/BL) work – Working through specific loops creates textured effects and dimensional details

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Mini Mandala Garland pattern is designed to use sport weight yarn, which is a light, versatile yarn weight ideal for creating delicate, detailed crochet work. The pattern calls for 100% viscose yarn, specifically the "Jazz" yarn (100g/3.5 oz., 236m/216 yds.), which provides a smooth, lustrous finish perfect for decorative garlands.

The designer recommends using yarn leftovers in five coordinating colors: dark blue, light blue, red, turquoise, and pink. This approach makes the pattern economical and allows crocheters to use up yarn scraps from other projects while creating a vibrant, multicolored finished piece.

The pattern requires a 3mm steel crochet hook (US size 3) or a hook size that produces an acceptable gauge for the chosen yarn. Additional materials needed include scissors and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembling the garland components.

Pattern Structure and Finishing

The pattern uses American Standard abbreviations throughout, with rounds (rnd) worked in the round to create circular mandala motifs. The needle join (NJ) technique is referenced for seamless joining of rounds. The finished size of individual mandalas is specified in the pattern, though the overall garland length is customizable based on the number of mandalas created and joined together.
