Product Description
Here is the last installment in our Block of the Month 2013 on the Julie Yeager Designs Board.
This pattern reminded me of some of the old-fashioned glass ornaments I had on my tree as a child. Mostly double crochet with a few post stitches.

Holiday Ornament Afghan Square by Julie Yeager
Project Overview
This is an advanced crochet pattern designed to create a 12-inch decorative afghan square featuring a holiday ornament motif. The project is ideal for experienced crocheters looking to add festive, dimensional elements to blankets, throws, or standalone decorative pieces. The finished square showcases traditional holiday aesthetics through strategic color blocking and stitch variation.
What Is Being Made
The Holiday Ornament Afghan Square is a single 12-inch crochet square module designed by Julie Yeager. This square can be used as a standalone ornament-themed accent piece or incorporated into larger afghan projects by joining multiple squares together. The design features a holiday ornament theme, making it suitable for seasonal home décor, gift-giving, or as part of a coordinated blanket collection.
Yarn and Materials
This project requires three distinct yarn colors in worsted weight yarn:
- Color A (Scarlet): 40 grams
- Color B (White): 35 grams
- Color C (Fern): 40 grams
The pattern specifies a Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook as the suggested tool for this project. The worsted weight yarn paired with this hook size creates a fabric with appropriate drape and structure for an afghan square.
Crochet Techniques Used
This advanced-level pattern employs multiple crochet techniques to achieve its holiday ornament design. Color work is integral to the pattern, requiring crocheters to manage three separate yarn colors throughout the project. The pattern utilizes both back loop only (BLO) and front loop only (FLO) techniques, which create textural variation and definition in the finished piece. Joining methods include the join with single crochet technique, which provides a seamless transition between rounds.
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
The Holiday Ornament Afghan Square incorporates a comprehensive range of crochet stitches appropriate for an advanced project:
- Single Crochet (sc): A foundational short stitch used for shaping and joining
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): A medium-height stitch that serves as a transition between single and double crochet heights
- Double Crochet (dc): A standard mid-range stitch used extensively throughout the pattern
- Treble Crochet (tr): A taller stitch that adds height and openness to fabric sections
- Double-Treble Crochet (DTr): An advanced tall stitch requiring three yarn-overs and multiple draw-through sequences, creating dramatic height and dimension
- Chain (ch): The foundational stitch used for spacing and turning
- Slip Stitch (sl): Used for joining rounds and moving yarn across stitches without adding height
Pattern Structure and Special Considerations
The pattern follows American crochet terminology throughout. Special stitch conventions include counting ch-2 at the beginning of a round as a half double crochet and ch-3 at the beginning of a round as a double crochet. These conventions are essential for maintaining proper stitch counts and pattern alignment. The pattern provides detailed instructions for the double-treble crochet stitch, which requires executing five loops on the hook through multiple yarn-over and draw-through sequences, demonstrating the advanced skill level required for this project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as advanced, making it suitable for experienced crocheters who are comfortable with multi-color work, specialty stitches, and complex stitch sequences. The inclusion of double-treble crochet stitches and the management of three yarn colors simultaneously requires strong foundational crochet skills and pattern-reading ability.
