What is Being Made

Gust is a downloadable knitting pattern for a cowl designed by Lisa Richardson and published by Rowan. This intermediate-level project creates a versatile neck accessory available in three sizes to fit bust measurements of 71-97 cm (28-38 in), 102-127 cm (40-50 in), and 132-157 cm (52-62 in). The finished cowl features a lower edge circumference of 106 cm (41¾ in), 135 cm (53¼ in), or 174 cm (68½ in) depending on size selection.

Techniques and Construction

Gust employs bobble stitch as its primary decorative technique, creating textured patterning throughout the cowl. The pattern incorporates strategic yarn forward increases (Kfb) to shape the garment and establish proper fit. The construction method uses circular knitting on double-pointed needles and a circular needle, allowing for seamless in-the-round knitting. The yarn shown in the pattern photograph is Rainy 552. Knitting is executed on 6mm (US 10) needles, specifically a set of 4 double-pointed needles and a 6mm circular needle no longer than 80 cm. The pattern tension is 14.5 stitches and 20 rows to 10 centimeters, measured over the bobble pattern using 6mm needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper cowl fit and drape.
