What is Being Made

The Gothic Windows Headband is a knitted accessory designed to fit adult-sized heads measuring 20-24 inches around. Inspired by Gothic architectural elements, this headband features dramatic cabled "openings" that create a striking visual pattern reminiscent of Gothic windows. The finished headband measures 18 inches around and 3 inches wide, making it a substantial statement piece suitable for various occasions and head sizes.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several essential knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance. The pattern requires proficiency in working in the round, which creates a seamless, tubular construction. Knitters will use fundamental knit and purl stitches to establish the textured base and create contrast within the design.

The signature Gothic aesthetic comes from cable stitches, which are the primary decorative element. The pattern utilizes both 1/1 right cable crosses (1/1 RC) and 1/1 left cable crosses (1/1 LC), as well as right purl crosses (1/1 RPC) and left purl crosses (1/1 LPC). These cable techniques are worked in repeating rounds to create the dramatic "window" openings that give the headband its Gothic character. The pattern also incorporates ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches) in the opening rounds to establish structure and elasticity.

Materials and Tools

This project uses Knit Picks Palette fingering weight yarn in 100% Peruvian Highland Wool. The yarn is available in the colorway Golden Heather as shown in the pattern. Less than one ball is required, with the yarn providing 231 yards per 50-gram ball, making this an economical project that uses minimal yardage.

Needles required are 2.25 mm/US 1 circular needles, either 12-20 inches long or a longer 36-inch circular needle for the magic loop method. The magic loop technique is an excellent option for knitting small circumferences in the round without requiring double-pointed needles.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 8 stitches and 10 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch, blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements of 18 inches around and 3 inches wide. The pattern begins with casting on 120 stitches and working in the round, with the cable pattern repeating 15 times across the circumference.
