What is Being Made

The Feamainn is a versatile knitted cowl, wrap, and scarf design created by independent designer Ciara Ní Reachtnín. This elegant piece measures 145cm by 40cm and is constructed using just one ball of yarn, making it an economical and accessible project. The design draws inspiration from seaweed found in ocean depths, with the yarn's varying hues reflecting the beautiful colors of the sea. The wrap functions as a multi-purpose garment: it can be worn open over a dress for glamorous occasions, or closed with buttons to transform into a cosy cowl that can be worn long or doubled up for added warmth and texture.

Design Features and Construction

The Feamainn features a distinctive sea foam lace construction that creates a light and airy fabric without adding bulk to the wearer. This thoughtful construction makes the wrap suitable for layering over various garments without creating excess volume. The lace pattern is enhanced with decorative beads that evoke pearls found within the sea, adding a touch of glamour and visual interest to the delicate lacework. Nine buttons are incorporated into the design, allowing the wearer to close the wrap and convert it from an open wrap into a fitted cowl.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This beginner-friendly design utilizes sea foam lace as its primary stitch pattern. The lace construction requires basic knitting knowledge and is accessible to those new to lace knitting. The pattern incorporates beadwork, with beads added through the knitting process using a crochet hook sized to fit through the beads (1.25mm). This beading technique adds embellishment and visual depth while maintaining the lightweight quality of the lace fabric. The wrap is worked on straight needles or circular needles and finished with wet blocking to achieve the specified gauge and final dimensions.

The Feamainn is designed to work with 3-ply, 4-ply, 6-ply, and sport weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended drape and appearance. Knitting needles required include 5mm (US size 6) and 7mm (US size 7) straights or 100cm circular needles. Additional notions include a 1.25mm crochet hook for bead placement, two stitch markers, a tapestry needle for finishing, nine buttons for closure, and 122 size ten beads for embellishment. The gauge is 12 stitches and 12 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in sea foam lace after wet blocking.
