Elvish Teeny Tiny Hat by Alexandra Davidoff
What Is Being Made
The Elvish Teeny Tiny Hat is a miniature knitted hat designed for preemies with a head circumference up to 12 inches (30.5 cm). This delicate garment measures 4 inches (10.5 cm) in length and 8 inches (20.5 cm) in circumference, making it an ideal accessory for newborns or as a decorative keepsake. The hat features a charming pointed silhouette characteristic of elvish-inspired designs, combining both aesthetic appeal and practical sizing for the tiniest heads.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and decorative techniques. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish. The pattern incorporates yarn overs to create decorative eyelet details and lace elements. Decreasing is utilized through the purl three together (p3tog) stitch to shape the hat and create the tapered crown. The construction begins with a cast-on of 54 stitches worked loosely to ensure a comfortable edge, and concludes with a bind-off to secure the final stitches.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the hat, created by alternating knit and purl rows. When worked in the round, stockinette is achieved by knitting every round, producing a smooth, classic fabric with a V-pattern texture on the right side.
- Leaf Pattern: A decorative stitch pattern worked over 12 rounds that combines knit, purl, yarn overs, and decreases to create an elegant leafy motif. This pattern is repeated three times across the cast-on stitches, with the pattern repeat measuring 18 stitches.
- Purl Stitches (p2, p3): Used to create texture contrast and definition within the Leaf Pattern.
- Knit Stitches (k1, k2): Form the primary fabric structure and work in conjunction with other stitches in the decorative pattern.
- Yarn Overs (yo): Create decorative holes and lace-like openings that add visual interest to the hat.
- Purl Three Together (p3tog): A centered decrease that reduces stitch count while creating a decorative element within the Leaf Pattern.
Materials
Yarn: The pattern calls for 220 Superwash Merino by Cascade Yarns, a 100% Superwash Merino Wool yarn with 220 yards (200 meters) per 3.5 grams (100 ounces). The recommended color is 01 Cream, though the superwash treatment makes this yarn suitable for gentle machine washing, an important consideration for baby garments. The yarn weight is DK to worsted weight, providing excellent stitch definition for the delicate Leaf Pattern.
Needles: The pattern specifies US7 (4.5 mm) ChiaoGoo Red circular needles in 12-inch (30.5 cm) length, paired with matching double-pointed needles (dpns) for working the crown decreases. Circular needles facilitate working in the round without interruption, while dpns allow for the final shaping when stitches become too few for the circular needle.
Additional Notions: Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, while a tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends and any finishing touches.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using US7 (4.5 mm) needles. Achieving proper gauge is critical for this tiny garment to ensure the finished hat fits correctly on a preemie head. The intermediate skill level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic techniques and able to follow pattern instructions with decorative stitch elements.
