Product Description

This is a no-brainer shawl. Knit it while watching TV or talking to your family, on road trips in the car or whenever you want to have something to knit that you can easily put aside any time.

The shawl is worked from the top to the bottom with increases in every second row. I used aran weight yarn for mine, but really, you can use whatever you have. Just reserve 1 third of it for the border and knit until you run out of yarn. Gauge and size are up to you.

Difficulty level: easy (knit and purl, easy lace stitches, basic top down shawl construction)

Yarn: Alize Burcum Batik patterns (100% acrylic; 210m/100g; 230yds/3.53oz), 3 skeins. 2 skeins are used for the shawl body, 1 for the border.

Needles: 5mm/US 8

Notions: yarn needle, 1 stitch marker (optional)

Gauge: 17 stitches/28 rows in stockinette stitch = 10cm/4in.

Size: 190 x 70cm (76 x 28in). This is the size of my sample. You can work the shawl in any desired size. Please note that the size will have influence on yardage.

Easy Peasy Shawl by Iglinz Crafts

Project Overview

Easy Peasy is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl designed for relaxed, portable crafting. This top-down construction shawl is perfect for knitters who want a project they can easily set aside and pick up again, making it ideal for watching television, traveling, or casual family time. The straightforward construction and minimal attention requirements make it an excellent choice for knitters new to shawl patterns.

What Is Being Made

A triangular or crescent-shaped shawl worked from the top down, measuring approximately 190 x 70 centimeters (76 x 28 inches) in the sample provided. The design is highly adaptable, allowing knitters to adjust the final size based on available yarn and personal preference.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Easy Peasy employs a classic top-down shawl construction method with increases worked in every second row. This systematic approach creates the characteristic expanding shape of a top-down shawl. The pattern incorporates easy lace stitches alongside fundamental knitting techniques, making it accessible to beginners while still producing an elegant finished garment.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch – the foundational stitch for the shawl body
  • Purl stitch – used in combination with knit stitches
  • Easy lace stitches – simple openwork patterns that add visual interest without requiring advanced techniques
  • Stockinette stitch – the primary fabric texture for gauge measurement

Yarn and Materials

The sample shawl uses Alize Burcum Batik, a 100% acrylic yarn available in batik patterns. This yarn comes in 100-gram skeins with a yardage of 210 meters (230 yards per 3.53 ounces). The Easy Peasy pattern requires 3 skeins total: 2 skeins for the main shawl body and 1 skein reserved for the border.

The pattern notes that while aran weight yarn was used for the sample, knitters can substitute any yarn weight they have available. The designer recommends reserving approximately one-third of total yardage for the border and knitting the body until yarn runs out, allowing for flexible sizing based on actual yarn on hand.

Needles and Notions

  • Needles: 5mm (US size 8)
  • Yarn needle – for weaving in ends
  • Stitch marker – optional, helpful for tracking pattern repeats

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 17 stitches and 28 rows in stockinette stitch over 10 centimeters (4 inches). The sample shawl measures 190 x 70 centimeters (76 x 28 inches), but the design is intentionally flexible. Knitters can work the shawl to any desired size, though the designer notes that size adjustments will affect total yardage requirements.

Difficulty Level

Rated as easy, this pattern is ideal for beginner knitters. Required skills include basic knit and purl stitches, simple lace stitch techniques, and fundamental top-down shawl construction principles. No advanced shaping or complex stitch patterns are involved.
