Comedy Cover – Free Crochet Blanket Pattern in Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Aran

The Comedy Cover is a striking, large-format crochet blanket pattern by Paintbox Yarns, available as a free downloadable PDF. Rated easy to intermediate in difficulty, this project is an excellent choice for crocheters who are comfortable with basic stitches and are ready to explore colorwork techniques. The finished blanket measures approximately 51½ inches wide by 72¾ inches long (131cm × 185cm), making it a generous throw size suitable for sofas, beds, or as a cozy gift.

Materials Used

Yarn

The pattern calls for Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Aran, a wool-blend yarn in the aran weight category, sold in 3½oz (100g) balls. The color palette is bold and cheerful, using six carefully chosen shades:

• Kingfisher Blue (A) – 4 balls
• Vintage Pink (B) – 4 balls
• Buttercup Yellow (C) – 2 balls
• Raspberry Pink (D) – 1 ball
• Duck Egg Blue (E) – 3 balls
• Rose Red (F) – 4 balls

The varying ball quantities reflect how each color is distributed across the striped and stranded colorwork sections of the design. Paintbox Yarns notes that yarn quantities are approximate and based on average requirements, and the brand recommends using the specified yarn to ensure the finished item matches the pattern's intended measurements and appearance.

Hook

A US H/8 (5mm) crochet hook is recommended throughout the pattern. This hook size is well-suited to aran weight yarn and helps achieve the correct gauge for the blanket's stated finished dimensions.

Techniques Used

The Comedy Cover incorporates several crochet techniques that give it both its visual impact and its structural integrity:

• Tapestry Crochet (Stranded Colorwork): This is the headline technique of the pattern. Tapestry crochet involves working with two or more colors simultaneously, carrying the unused yarn inside the stitches as you work. This creates a dense, fabric-like fabric with a clean, multi-colored pattern on the right side. It is ideal for bold geometric or repeating motifs and is what gives the Comedy Cover its distinctive, graphic appearance. Because the floats are enclosed within the stitches rather than carried loosely at the back, the finished fabric is neat on both sides and very durable.
• Stripes: The design also features striped sections, where colors are changed at regular intervals to create horizontal bands of color. Stripe work in crochet is a classic technique that complements the more complex tapestry sections and adds rhythm to the overall layout of the blanket.
• Worked in the Round: The blanket is constructed using a seamless, worked-in-the-round method. Rather than working back and forth in rows and seaming pieces together, this approach builds the fabric continuously, eliminating the need for sewing up seams at the end. This is particularly advantageous for a large project like a blanket, as it keeps the construction tidy and the fabric consistent throughout.
• Seamless Construction: Closely linked to working in the round, the seamless technique ensures there are no visible joins or seams running through the finished blanket, resulting in a polished, professional look.

Stitches Used

While the full stitch list is detailed within the downloadable PDF, the pattern is built around standard crochet stitches worked in the context of tapestry colorwork. The tapestry crochet special stitch is explicitly highlighted in the pattern's Special Stitches section, indicating that understanding how to carry and enclose a second yarn color while crocheting is essential to completing this project successfully. The pattern is written in US crochet terminology, with UK terminology provided in italics within round brackets throughout, making it accessible to crocheters on both sides of the Atlantic.
