Butterfly Wrap in Rowan Summerlite 4Ply

What is Being Made

The Butterfly Wrap is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Martin Storey. This shoulder wrap features a generous finished width of 43 cm and an extended length of approximately 243.5 cm, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering and draping across the shoulders. The design showcases a patterned construction that combines garter stitch borders with a charted stitch pattern throughout the body.

Knitting Techniques Used

This wrap employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The design utilizes a charted stitch pattern that is repeated multiple times across the width and length of the piece. Garter stitch is worked continuously on the first and last 4 stitches of every row to create neat, finished edges. The pattern is worked flat in rows, with the main repeat section (rows 1-36) repeated a total of 24 times, followed by an additional single repeat of rows 1-6. The piece concludes with 6 additional rows of garter stitch across all stitches before binding off.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Garter stitch: Worked on border stitches and final rows to frame the design and provide structure
  • Charted stitch pattern: A 36-stitch repeat worked across the center section, repeated 3 times per row
  • Knit stitches: Primary stitch throughout the pattern
  • Decreases: Two stitches knitted together (abbreviated as "2 M re zus") incorporated into the stitch pattern

Materials and Gauge

The Butterfly Wrap is designed to be worked in Rowan Summerlite 4Ply yarn, a lightweight 4-ply weight yarn. The pattern calls for Washed Linen shade (color code 418). Knitting needles size 3 are used throughout. The recommended gauge is 28 stitches and 36 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) when working the stitch pattern on size 3 needles. Approximately 121 meters of yarn (equivalent to one 50-gram ball of Rowan Summerlite 4Ply) is required to complete this project.

Pattern Construction Details

The wrap is constructed by casting on 121 stitches and working in rows. The first and last 4 stitches of every row are worked in garter stitch to create selvage edges. The remaining stitches are worked following the charted stitch pattern, with the 36-stitch repeat worked 3 times across the row width. The charted pattern (rows 1-36) forms the foundation of the design and is repeated 24 complete times, creating the length and visual interest of the wrap. Following these repeats, rows 1-6 of the pattern are worked once more, and the piece is finished with 6 rows of garter stitch worked over all stitches. All stitches are then bound off to complete the wrap.
