Bikini Socken in Regia Cotton Tutti Frutti – Free Knitting Pattern for Socks (PDF Download)

This free downloadable PDF pattern by the REGIA Designteam guides knitters through creating a pair of fun and colourful Bikini Socken — a playful take on the classic knitted sock design. First published in September 2004 and updated since, this pattern is rated Einfach (Easy/Beginner), making it an excellent choice for those who are new to sock knitting or looking for a relaxed, enjoyable project. The pattern is available in three sizes: 32–35, 36–39, and 40–43, covering children through to adults.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a pair of knitted socks with a distinctive Bikini construction — a style that features a split toe design reminiscent of traditional Japanese tabi socks or toe-separator socks. The defining feature is the separated big toe, which is worked independently from the remaining toes, giving the finished sock its characteristic "bikini" or split-toe silhouette. This makes the socks particularly well suited for wearing with toe-post sandals or flip-flops, adding a quirky and fashionable edge to a timeless handknitted accessory.

Design Details

The sock is worked in the round on double-pointed needles, following a traditional top-down or round construction method. Key structural elements include:

  • A shaped toe with a one-sided band tip (einseitige Bandspitze) — a neat, tailored toe finish achieved through specific decrease sequences
  • A separately worked big toe — stitches are picked up from the gusset/bridge (Steg) and worked over the held stitches to form the individual toe section
  • Paired decreases for shaping, including rechts zusammenstricken (knit two together) and überzogen zusammenstricken (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over — a left-leaning decrease), creating a symmetrical and tidy toe reduction
  • Stitches are cast off using a purl cast-off (links stricken) for a smooth and flexible edge

Sizes Covered

  • Size 32–35 (smaller foot)
  • Size 36–39 (medium foot)
  • Size 40–43 (larger foot)

Where instructions differ between sizes, they are presented in sequence from smallest to largest, clearly colour-coded in the original PDF for easy reading. Where only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes.

Techniques Used

  • Knitting in the round on double-pointed needles (DPNs) — the standard method for producing seamless, tubular sock fabric
  • Picking up stitches from the bridge/gusset (Steg) to begin the big toe section — a technique that requires some confidence but is well within reach for a beginner following clear instructions
  • Decreasing for toe shaping using both right-leaning and left-leaning decreases to create a neat, angled band tip
  • Casting off with a purl stitch for a stretchy, comfortable finish at the toe openings
  • Holding/placing stitches aside (stillgelegte Maschen) while working the main toe, then returning to complete the big toe separately

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (rechts stricken) — the primary stitch used throughout the sock body and toe
  • Purl stitch (links stricken) — used during the cast-off for the toe edges
  • K2tog (rechts zusammenstricken) — a right-leaning decrease
  • SSK-style decrease (überzogen zusammenstricken: 1 M abheben, 1 M rechts stricken, abgehobene M überziehen)
