The Bamboo Thicket Mitts are fingerless mitts designed by Ellen Torunn Kvalheim Andresen of SISO Designs. The pattern offers multiple customization options, allowing makers to adjust the length, add contrasting cuffs, or exclude thumbs entirely based on personal preference.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

These mitts are constructed using circular knitting methods, with makers able to choose between magic loop, two circular needles, or a set of double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the main body. The pattern includes separate DPNs for working the thumb sections. The finished mitts measure approximately 18 centimeters (7 inches) in length, and the stretchy nature of the primary stitch pattern ensures excellent fit across multiple sizes without requiring extensive sizing options.

Primary Stitch: Bamboo Stitch

The defining feature of these mitts is the Bamboo stitch, a textured and highly elastic stitch pattern that creates both visual interest and functional stretch. The Bamboo stitch is worked using a yarn over (yo) combined with knit stitches, creating a distinctive appearance. The pattern specifies the stitch as: yarn over (with yarn from front to back), knit 3, slip yarn over across the 3 knit stitches. This stitch pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 17 rows over 5 centimeters (2 inches) when measured unstretched and unblocked.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern requires 146 meters (160 yards) of DK or heavy sport weight yarn. A wool or wool-blend yarn is specifically recommended, as pure hemp or bamboo yarns are not suitable for this design. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Wollemeise DK yarn in the Turkis colorway. Additional materials include 3 millimeter (US size 2½) needles or needles sized appropriately to achieve the specified gauge, magic loop or circular needles, DPNs for thumb construction, scrap yarn for holding stitches, and a tapestry needle for finishing.
