Aloutte Jacket and Beanie – Pattern Summary (Valley Yarns Southwick, Design #988 by Julie Turjoman)

Overview

The Aloutte Jacket and Beanie is a charming baby layette set designed by Julie Turjoman and published as pattern #988. The set is knitted using Valley Yarns Southwick, a baby-soft worsted-weight yarn blended from 52% Pima Cotton and 48% Bamboo. The result is a breathable, gentle-against-skin fabric that is ideally suited to infant clothing. This downloadable PDF pattern is rated Beginner to Intermediate in skill level, making it an accessible project for newer knitters while still offering enough detail to satisfy more experienced crafters. The set makes a thoughtful handmade baby shower gift or a treasured keepsake for a newborn.

What Is Being Made

  • Long-sleeved wrap-front jacket – a classic baby jacket with a wrap-style front closure, long sleeves, contrast color ribbed trim, and decorative I-Cord ties.
  • Matching beanie hat – a snug-fitting baby hat featuring the same contrast color ribbed trim and coordinating design details as the jacket.

Sizes Available

Jacket: Available in five sizes — 0–3 months, 3–6 months, 6–12 months, 12–18 months, and 18–24 months. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size 6–12 months, with a finished chest measurement of 18 inches for that size. Chest measurements range from 16½ to 20 inches across all sizes.

Beanie: Available in three sizes — 0–3 months, 6–12 months, and 18–24 months. Finished circumferences range from 12 to 16 inches. The sample shown is the 6–12 month size at 14 inches circumference.

Yarn and Color

Both the jacket and the beanie use Valley Yarns Southwick in two colors:

  • Main Color (MC): Nantucket Blue — used for the body of both the jacket and the beanie.
  • Contrast Color (CC): Onyx — used for the ribbed trim and I-Cord ties on both pieces.

Each skein of Valley Yarns Southwick weighs 50 grams and measures 105 yards. Yarn requirements for the jacket range from 3 to 6 skeins of MC depending on size, plus 1 skein of CC. The beanie requires 1 skein of MC and 1 skein of CC.

Needles and Other Materials

The pattern calls for two needle sizes to achieve the correct gauge and fabric texture:

  • Larger needles – US size 7 (4.5 mm): Used for the main stockinette fabric. Required in both 16-inch and 32–40-inch circular needle lengths for the jacket, and a 9-inch circular needle for the beanie. Double-pointed needles (dpn) in the same size are also needed for both pieces.
  • Smaller needles – US size 5 (3.75 mm): Used for the ribbed trim sections. Required in both 16-inch and 32–40-inch circular needle lengths for the jacket, and a 9-inch circular needle for the beanie.

Additional materials include stitch markers, stitch holders, and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Gauge

The pattern gauge is 20 stitches and 30 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger US size 7 needles, measured after blocking. Achieving accurate gauge is important for ensuring the finished garment matches the stated size measurements.
