Product Description

This is a happy shawl. Big, bold, cosy. It brings a smile to your face and a spring to your step when you wear it. One for those days when you want to answer a big “yes” to the eternal “why” of life.

Designed with heavier yarns in mind this shawl is simple to re-size and the body lace is easy to work with all-right side lace and knit yarn overs. To keep it interesting, it has a custom-designed knit-on border worked perpendicular to the main shawl. This unique border stitch pattern was specially created to work with the bold scale of the yarn and pattern and features patterning on both sides (but it is very easy!).

Add to this that it knits up very quickly in chunky yarn, and you will have another big tick against that knitting to do list!

The pattern has full written instructions and charts and is easy to resize.

Affirmative Shawl by Elizabeth Felgate

What Is Being Made

The Affirmative Shawl is a traditional top-down triangle shawl designed by Elizabeth Felgate. This moderately large shawl features a bold scale with a wingspan of 196 centimeters (77 inches) and a drop of 81 centimeters (32 inches) when blocked to finished dimensions. The shawl is specifically engineered for winter wear, providing substantial coverage and warmth for braving the coldest of winter days. The design radiates happy confidence and joyful simplicity, culminating in a custom-designed knit-on border that adds unabashed exuberance to the finished piece.

Design and Construction Approach

As a top-down triangle shawl, the Affirmative begins at the neck and expands outward, allowing knitters to customize the final size by simply stopping at their preferred dimensions. The pattern includes full resizing instructions, making it accessible for knitters who wish to create a smaller or larger version than the standard blocked measurements. This flexibility is a key feature for adapting the shawl to individual preferences and yarn availability.

Lace Pattern and Techniques

The shawl showcases a lace pattern characterized by joyful simplicity, creating an elegant visual effect across the triangular form. The lace work is complemented by a custom-designed knit-on border that frames the shawl's edges with distinctive detail. Knitters will need to demonstrate ability to read their knitting and possess some previous lace knitting experience to successfully navigate the pattern. The combination of lace sections and the knit-on border creates visual interest while maintaining the design's confident aesthetic.

Stitches and Knitting Skills Required

This pattern is rated as advanced beginner to intermediate level, though knitters without prior lace experience may find it considerably more challenging. Essential skills include the ability to read your knitting—a fundamental technique for troubleshooting and understanding stitch progression—and demonstrated experience with lace knitting. These competencies allow knitters to work through the pattern's lace sections with confidence and catch any potential errors before they become problematic.

Materials and Specifications

The Affirmative Shawl is designed for heavier weights of yarn, specifically accommodating aran, chunky, and super chunky yarn weights. This emphasis on substantial yarn creates the bold scale and joyful visual presence that defines the design. Knitters will require an 8mm (US Size 11) circular needle with a long cable to accommodate the expanding triangle construction and the shawl's generous finished dimensions. The use of heavier yarn weights means the shawl knits up relatively quickly while providing excellent warmth and drape for winter wear.

Pattern Format

The Affirmative Shawl pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to complete instructions, resizing guidance, and all necessary information for successful completion of this independent designer creation by Elizabeth Felgate.
