Accessories in Sirdar Wild 7971 – Hat, Scarf, Wristwarmers and Husky Boots Knitting Pattern

This Sirdar pattern 7971 is a downloadable PDF containing four coordinating accessories designed for knitters working with Sirdar Wild super chunky yarn. The collection covers sizes from 4 years through to adult, making it a versatile pattern suitable for the whole family. The four designs included are a hat, a scarf, wrist warmers, and Husky Boots — a cosy style of boot cuff or leg warmer designed to fit over footwear. Each accessory is worked separately and uses its own shade of Sirdar Wild, allowing for a mix-and-match approach across the collection.

Skill Level and Techniques

This pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty. While the individual pieces are relatively compact and quick to knit thanks to the super chunky weight yarn, the inclusion of cable work in the scarf and button fastenings on the Husky Boots means a degree of prior knitting experience is recommended. Knitters should be comfortable with basic shaping, rib patterns, and working with a cable needle before attempting all four designs.

Materials Required

All four accessories are knitted using Sirdar Wild super chunky yarn in 50g balls. Each design uses a different shade:

  • HatSirdar Wild shade 401, requiring 1–2 balls depending on size
  • ScarfSirdar Wild shade 405, requiring 3–4 balls depending on size
  • Wrist WarmersSirdar Wild shade 404, requiring 1–2 balls depending on size
  • Husky BootsSirdar Wild shade 407, requiring 3–4 balls depending on size

Two sizes of knitting needles are used across the collection: 8mm (UK0 / USA11) needles for the hat, scarf, and wrist warmers, and 6½mm (UK3 / USA10.5) needles for the hat ribbing and Husky Boots. A cable needle is also required for the scarf, and 2–3 buttons are needed for the Husky Boots, depending on size.

The Hat

The hat is worked flat on knitting needles and is sized to fit an average child's or adult's head for the relevant age group. It begins with a ribbed brim worked on 6½mm needles in 1x1 rib (knit 1, purl 1), which provides a neat, stretchy edge. The body of the hat is then worked in stocking stitch on 8mm needles. Crown shaping is achieved through a series of decrease rows, using k2tog (knit two together) to reduce the stitch count progressively until the hat tapers to a close at the top. The tension for the stocking stitch section is 20 stitches and 29 rows to 20cm on 8mm needles, while the rib section achieves 13 stitches and 17 rows to 10cm on 6½mm needles.

The Scarf

The scarf is knitted on 8mm needles using Sirdar Wild shade 405 and features cable stitch detailing, adding a textural, decorative element to what might otherwise be a straightforward accessory. The cable work uses two specialist cable stitches defined in the pattern:

  • T6B – slip next 3 stitches to back on cable needle, knit 3, then purl 3 from the cable needle
  • T6F – slip next 3 stitches to front on cable needle, purl 3, then knit 3 from the cable needle

These travelling cable stitches create a classic rope or twist effect across the scarf fabric. The finished scarf width is consistent across children's sizes at 18cm (7 inches), increasing to 22cm (8¾ inches) for the adult size. Length
