Drape is the first decision
Crochet fabric is heavier than knitted fabric at the same gauge, and a dress carries a lot of it. Cotton, linen, bamboo and viscose blends fall softly and stay cool, which is why so many summer dresses use them; they also grow lengthways under their own weight, so plan for it. Wool and wool blends give body and warmth for winter tunics and are more elastic, so ribbing and waist shaping behave. A fine yarn on a larger hook produces a lighter, more fluid fabric than a thick yarn on a small hook — if a pattern's photographs show a dress that flows, look at the hook size relative to the yarn weight before you substitute.
Getting the size right
- Choose by finished bust measurement, never by dress size. Compare it to a garment you already wear.

Either buy or make a simple slip in a matching or contrasting shade, or line the skirt with a lightweight cotton or jersey underskirt stitched to the waist seam. Finishing, washing and storage
Block the finished dress on a flat surface to the schematic measurements and let it dry completely before judging the length. Hang it on a padded hanger for a day and check the hem again — most dresses drop a couple of centimetres and some drop far more. Wash by hand or on a cool delicate cycle in a mesh bag, never wring, and dry flat. Store folded rather than hanging long-term, or the shoulders will stretch.
