How to make perfect paper hamantaschen

The Jewish holiday Purim is just around the corner, and there's no better way to celebrate than by making these super sweet paper versions of hamantaschen. Here, party decor extraordinaire and all-round crafter Ilyssa Minkus shows you how to make them, step-by-step.

Hamantaschen is a special three-pointed cookie, typically filled with jam or chocolate, and they're traditionally made around Purim. Baking not your thing? Don't panic! These pretty paper hamantaschen are the perfect solution. You won't have to worry about the cookies unfolding in the oven, and the options for fillings are endless! They make the ideal easy papercraft for kids, and they can even be used as a fun card – just write a note on the back to wish a friend a Purim Sameach!

Coloured card
Scissors or cutting machine
Glue
Hot glue gun

Cut your 'dough' paper into circles. I chose a 3 inch circle, but it can be any size depending on how big you want it to be.

Choose your filling! There are so many fun options for this – poppy seed, apricot, or my favourite, sprinkles! To create the filling, cut a triangle to fit in the centre of the circle and glue it down. If you’re going for sprinkles, you can just glue inside the centre of the circle and glue the sprinkles on.

Pro Tip

I used the American Crafts Smooth Cardstock Pack to create the colourful sprinkles.

Fold the sides of the circle to create a hamantasch!

Use a tiny bit of hot glue to connect the 3 corners.

Write a note on the back and tie it onto your mischloach manot (a Purim basket filled with gifts, food and drink)! Happy Purim!
